Charterhouse School is a private, specialized day program that serves students ages 5-22 who have varying IEP classifications, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Emotional Disability (ED), Other Health Impairment (OHI), and Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD).

The Charterhouse Richmond campus is comprised of 125 students from districts throughout Central Virginia, as well as young people from outside Metro Richmond who are enrolled in Shineforth’s residential program. Its staff includes 50 full- and part-time educators and therapeutic professionals.

There are 45 students enrolled at Charterhouse School Edinburg who represent multiple districts across the Shenandoah Valley. Edinburg’s staff includes 30 educators and therapeutic professionals.

“At Charterhouse School, we strive to help students achieve their academic and developmental goals,” said Sarah Headley-Boyd, Shineforth’s Vice President of Education. “We do this by surrounding them with compassionate educators and support staff, connecting them with extensive academic resources, and working closely with their caregivers and localities.”

Charterhouse School provides a trauma-sensitive learning environment that helps prepare students like Ash to either return to their assigned public school or achieve their post-secondary education goals.

As a member of the Charterhouse School community, you’ll enjoy a competitive salary, a mission-driven culture, comprehensive benefits (dental, health, vision), paid leave, and an average student-to-staff ratio of 8:2.

Charterhouse School is one of more than a dozen programs offered by Shineforth, a statewide nonprofit that’s been operating from the same campus in Richmond since 1900 and whose suite of services includes education, foster care, adoption, and youth residential.

“At both Charterhouse School locations and across the entire Shineforth community, we focus on the unique circumstances of each child we serve,” Headley-Boyd said. “When it comes to academics, sometimes success means that a student returns to their assigned public school and graduates. Other times, success means that the student remains with Charterhouse School post-graduation and participates in our Applied Curriculum Program.”
